The McCollums of Walkerville, Arkansas
John Clayton McCollum and his wife, Pricilla Tyler moved from Copiah County, Mississippi to Columbia County, Arkansas in 1850. This started a long line of McCollum’s that farmed the land and became renowned in the area. The McCollum Family led the community in experimenting with new crops and agricultural techniques, using modern machinery and practicing conservation measures on their farm. The family was instrumental in the founding of the Arkansas Agricultural School, the forerunner of Southern Arkansas University.
George A. Malcolm
George A. Malcolm was the first Fairfax County, Virginia Sheriff killed in the line of duty on April 7, 1905. George Malcolm (b 1880) was 24 years old and was a deputy sheriff for only 11 months when he tried to arrest an Italian immigrant. The research indicates that “During the arrest, the man pulled out a handgun and shot Deputy Malcolm five times, hitting him in the abdomen, hip, and hand.” Deputy Malcolm was taken to the Emergency Hospital in Washington DC, where he died a day later. He is buried at Pohick Church, Lorton, Virginia.
James Malcolm
James Malcolm was born and raised in Dundee, Scotland. During the late 1800’s, Dundee was known for its jute industry. James and his son, William worked in this industry. The family also spent in Barking, England where they worked in the jute industry as well. As the jute industry waned, they took up farming. In 1907, William Malcolm came to America with only $50 to his name. He settled in Yonkers, New York.
